University Libraries as STEAM Learning Ecosystems: A Qualitative Study

This study investigated university libraries as STEAM learning ecosystems with a focus on Nigerian federal university libraries. The study was guided by four (4) specific objectives while employing a qualitative research approach. The population is 50, comprising university librarians in all the federal universities in Nigeria. The entire population was studied. A semi-structured interview protocol was used to collect data. However, data collected were analysed using thematic analysis. Findings revealed that federal university libraries in Nigeria engage in the strategic selection of information resources and promotion of STEAM learning-based services. It also revealed the provision of a wide range of teaching, learning and research resources in print and non-print formats for STEAM. Poor funding and management's poor perception of the library are among the challenges facing university libraries from becoming ecosystems for STEAM learning. Based on the findings, the study recommended that university libraries should be made state-of-the-art facilities, purposefully built and equipped to support innovativeness and further promote STEAM learning.
